3 tips for looking after your candle

For many people, they enjoy their favourite candle and light it time after time, but what they don’t know is by not maintaining it they aren’t getting the most out of their candle. This is especially true depending on the type of wax that your candle is produced by, from coconut wax to paraffin wax; there are things you can do to make the most out of your candle.

Trim the wick

To some people trimming the wick may seem like a gimmick and for others, it may just not be on your radar of things that you can do to look after your soy candle. The reason we recommend trimming your wick after each burn is that it allows your candle to burn consistently. Much like a house plant needs so much water, your candle needs a specific wick to wax to fragrance ratio.

Not only that but candles can also experience mushrooming, which means the candle has build up on the wick. To resolve this trim the excess off before each burn.

So how much do you trim your wick by?

  • Allow the candle to cool to room temperature

  • Using a wick trimmer cut the wick to 1/4 of an inch (6-7mm)

Short burn periods

Sometimes we want to lift the room's scent while getting ready to go out or after cleaning your space, only to blow the candle out after 30-40 minutes of burning. Most importantly you never leave your candle to burn unattended and always follow the safety instructions attached to your candle.

But by only allowing it to burn for short periods, you’re not allowing the candle to burn a melt pool. This is especially important for the first burn of your candle, as it will set it up for future burns. Instead, we recommend if possible to allow the candle to burn for 2 hours during the first burn.

As much as we all love a great quality candle try not to overburn it. We recommend burning for no more than 4 hours at a time.

Safety advice

It’s important that you always follow the safety instructions provided, this won’t only allow you to enjoy your candle safely, but it will also help your candle burn properly as well. As with any flammable product, it’s important that you never leave the candle unattended.

Some key things to consider

  • Burn your candle within sight

  • Keep away from drafts and vibrations, this will allow the flame to burn consistently

  • Keep out of reach from children and pets

  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire

  • Keep the candle free of any foreign materials, including trimmings

  • and only burn the candle on a stable, fire-resistant surface.
